Castel dell'Ovo Tickets, Hours & How to Get There: 2026 Practical Guide
Everything you need to plan a visit to Naples' oldest castle β and one critical update first. Castel dell'Ovo has never charged an admission fee, and there is no ticket to buy. Whether you can get inside is the one thing worth settling before you travel, so read the status note immediately below first. This page then covers what is still open and free to see, how to reach the castle by metro, bus and on foot, and which nearby paid castles can pick up the slack.
β οΈ Current Status
Castel dell'Ovo's interior is not confirmed open. The Comune di Napoli's official page still lists the castle as closed to the public until further notice for renovation work, and gives no reopening date. On 20 September 2026 Mayor Gaetano Manfredi announced that the castle would reopen and stay open, with guided visits by booking while restoration continues in other parts of the complex; as of 30 September 2026 no booking channel had been published. Check our opening hours and current access status page, or telephone the castle on 081 7953581, before planning a trip around going inside.
The β¬8 million restoration project (funded by the Development and Cohesion Fund) has completed facade work and removed external scaffolding, with further internal-room and lighting work planned.
Tickets & Admission: There Is No Ticket to Buy
How Much Does It Cost?
FREE. Castel dell'Ovo has never charged an admission fee β this is confirmed directly by the Comune di Napoli, the city agency that manages the site. That has not changed with the current closure; there is simply nothing being sold, because the interior is not open to visitors.
β οΈ Beware third-party "ticket" offers. If you see a site selling "Castel dell'Ovo tickets" or a paid skip-the-line pass, you are looking at a bundled guided tour or a booking convenience fee β not admission. The castle itself has never had a ticket price. No dress code applies to an ordinary visit; wear shoes you can walk in, since the site involves stone paths, ramps, and stairs.
Opening Hours (Reference β Verify Before Visiting)
The hours below are the castle's pre-closure reference hours: a guide to what to expect once the interior is receiving visitors again, not a statement of today's schedule. Check the status note above before building plans around an interior visit.
- Monday to Saturday: 9:00β18:30 (summer), 9:00β16:30 (winter)
- Sundays and public holidays: 9:00β14:00
- Last admission: roughly 45 minutes before close
What a Visit Looks Like Right Now
Today: the visit is the walk β the causeway, the exterior photographed from several angles, and a stroll through Borgo Marinari's marina for a coffee or a seafood lunch. We publish no visit duration: no official figure exists, and the crowd-sourced ranges disagree with each other.
Once the interior is receiving visitors again: the fortress terraces and the Gulf views from the top are the reason to go inside. Special exhibitions and events, when held, run under their own schedules.
What Is Still Open (And Free) Right Now
The Castel dell'Ovo experience is worth making regardless β it is about the setting as much as the building.
- The causeway: Walk out to the castle across the water on foot, free and open at any hour.
- Exterior photography: The fortress from the Rotonda Diaz side, the harbour side, and the return walk along Via Partenope β all free, all open.
- Borgo Marinari: The historic fishing village at the castle's base, fully operational with its marina and seafood restaurants.
- The Lungomare promenade: The seafront walk from Castel dell'Ovo toward Mergellina, with Vesuvius views throughout.
π‘ What to Expect on the Ground
You may walk down to a locked gate. That is normal right now β the exterior, causeway, and Borgo Marinari are the realistic visit. If an interior visit is the reason for your trip, check the official page first and consider one of the two open castles instead (see the castle comparison).
How to Get to Castel dell'Ovo
Address & Location
Castel dell'Ovo sits at Via Eldorado 3, on the Borgo Marinari waterfront between the San Ferdinando and Chiaia districts, on the Megaride peninsula in the Gulf of Naples.

On Foot from the Historic Centre
From Piazza del Plebiscito, it is a flat, scenic 15β20 minute walk along Via Cesario Console and the waterfront. This is the most pleasant approach and the one we would recommend on a clear day β it ends with the castle appearing across the water.
From the Cruise Port
The municipality and Port of Naples are about a 15-minute walk away along the waterfront. Taxis and ride-shares are available at the port if you prefer not to walk with luggage.
