Castel dell'Ovo: Opening Hours and Current Access Status

This page answers the two questions people arrive with: is Castel dell'Ovo open, and what are its opening hours when it is. The short answer is that the castle's operator still lists it as closed, while the mayor has announced a reopening that is not yet bookable β€” so the honest answer carries both, with the dates.

⚠️ Is the castle open? Start here

Castel dell'Ovo's interior is not confirmed open. The Comune di Napoli, which manages the castle, still lists it as "Chiuso al pubblico fino a data da destinarsi per lavori di ristrutturazione" β€” closed to the public until further notice for renovation work. That page was last updated on 12 August 2025 and carries no reopening date. See the Comune di Napoli's Castel dell'Ovo page.

On 20 September 2026, Mayor Gaetano Manfredi announced that the castle would reopen and stay open, with guided visits by booking while restoration continues in other parts of the complex. That announcement comes from press coverage and the city tourism portal, not from the Comune's own status page, which has not been updated since August 2025. As of 30 September 2026 β€” and again when we re-checked on 27 October 2026 β€” we found no booking channel for those guided visits published on the Comune's own channels.

One travel-resale portal states the castle "reopened at the end of September 2026". The operator's own page does not confirm that, and no booking channel exists, so we are not reporting a reopening as confirmed fact. Treat an interior visit as unconfirmed until the Comune's page or its booking channel says otherwise.

Before you plan a trip around going inside, telephone the castle on 081 7953581 β€” the number published on the Comune's own castle page β€” and ask whether the interior is receiving visitors that day.

Status re-checked on 27 October 2026.

πŸ“ž Who to call

Castel dell'Ovo (the castle itself): 081 7953581
Comune di Napoli switchboard: 081 7951111
Address: Via Eldorado 3, 80133 Napoli β€” the castle sits at the end of the causeway off Via Partenope

The castle's own line is the one that can answer the access question, so try it first; the switchboard is the general municipal number and will only route you back.

πŸ•’ Castel dell'Ovo opening hours (when the castle is open)

These are the castle's normal operating hours, published by the Comune di Napoli, for planning once the interior is receiving visitors again. They are reference hours only β€” not a statement that the castle is open today. Check the status above first.

Day Summer (daylight saving) Winter (standard time)
Monday to Saturday 09:00 – 19:30 (last access 18:45) 09:00 – 18:30 (last access 17:45)
Sundays & public holidays 09:00 – 14:00 (last access 13:15) 09:00 – 14:00 (last access 13:15)

Last access is around 45 minutes before closing, which is why the last-access times above sit 45 minutes inside the closing time. The castle does not close on a fixed weekday; Sundays and public holidays stay open, on the reduced hours shown.

Where the published hours disagree, and what we print. The Comune's own seasonal table is the reference above, and it is the set the operator publishes. Two disagreements are worth naming rather than hiding:

  • Sunday closing time. Some independent listings give a Sunday close of 18:00 rather than the Comune's 14:00. We print the Comune's 14:00 because it is the operator's own figure β€” but if you are planning a Sunday, the gap is big enough to be worth a phone call.
  • An older ministry listing. The Ministero della Cultura's page for the castle shows a flat 09:00–16:30 every day, but that page was last updated in December 2022 and disagrees with the operator's seasonal table. It is stale, and we do not publish it as current.

The summer/winter split is the daylight-saving change: a 19:30 weekday close while the clocks are forward, 18:30 once they are back. There is no other published seasonal exception.

πŸ’Ά Is there an entry fee?

No β€” entry has been free. The Comune di Napoli states that "access to the castle is free", and the Campania Artecard programme lists "Free entry" for the castle even without an Artecard. There is no admission ticket to buy for the interior; Castel dell'Ovo has never sold one.

This matters because "Castel dell'Ovo tickets" are sold online. Those are not admission β€” they are a guided-tour or booking bundle wrapped around a monument that is free to enter. Never pay a ticket price expecting it to be the entry fee. For what those packages actually cover, see tickets and tours β€” what you actually pay for.

πŸ“… Closure days and public holidays

There is no fixed weekly closing day at Castel dell'Ovo. The seasonal table above treats Sundays and public holidays as open, on the reduced 09:00–14:00 schedule β€” unlike Castel Nuovo, which closes on Sundays (that contrast is set out on our Castel dell'Ovo vs Castel Nuovo comparison).

The only seasonal rule published by the operator is the daylight-saving split. No separate holiday-closure schedule is published on the city pages we checked, so we print no holiday table β€” hours can change for events, and the current renovation closure overrides everything above.

Telephone the castle on 081 7953581 before travelling on a holiday, and treat the interior as unconfirmed until the status above changes.

🏰 What is free and open right now

Everything outside the castle walls is open to everyone, at any hour, and costs nothing. This is not a consolation prize β€” it is where most of the photographs of Naples are taken.

  • The causeway and the exterior. The 100-metre causeway linking Megaride island to the mainland is a public walkway, and the outside of the fortress β€” its towers, its walls, the sea on three sides β€” is fully visible. Walk it at any time of day or night.
  • Borgo Marinari. The old fishing harbour at the castle's base, now a cluster of seafood restaurants and boat moorings, is open and busy β€” the closest you can currently get to the castle's atmosphere with a table and a view. See Borgo Marinari restaurants.
  • Via Partenope and the Lungomare. The seafront promenade runs past the castle; the classic view of the castle with Vesuvius behind it is from here, not from inside.
  • The castle as scenery. Sunset from the causeway and the seafront is the classic image of this part of Naples, and it does not depend on a ticket or a door being open.

What you cannot do right now: enter the interior β€” the halls, the terraces, the ramparts and the museums inside the walls all sit behind the closure above. If the Manfredi announcement turns into a working booking channel, that changes; until it does, treat an interior visit as unconfirmed.

βœ… Sources and verification

Every load-bearing fact on this page is attributed, and the page carries its verification date rather than a year label:

  • Castle status and seasonal hours (operator): the Comune di Napoli's Castel dell'Ovo page and the Comune's English contact page for the castle. The status line was last updated by the Comune on 12 August 2025; the seasonal hours are the Comune's published table.
  • Reopening announcement: press coverage of the 20 September 2026 announcement by Mayor Gaetano Manfredi, and the city tourism portal.
  • Free entry: the Comune's contact page ("access to the castle is free") and the Campania Artecard listing ("Free entry" without Artecard).
  • Ministero della Cultura page: read and set aside β€” last updated 2 December 2022, and its flat 09:00–16:30 hours disagree with the operator's current table.

Verified 27 October 2026.

Opening hours can vary during special events, national holidays or adverse weather, and the current renovation closure overrides the reference hours above. For the most current information, telephone the castle on 081 7953581 or check the homepage for announcements.
